Hi! My name is Long Ngoc Nguyen, but everybody just call me Long. I live in Norway, and as you notice, fly tying is a passion to me. I love everything that have something to do with classic salmon flies. I don’t fish, don’t ask why.. I’ve have fished a little as anyone have done, but I’m just not there yet.
I think I began to tie when I was 12 years old, when I got my first vise. I tied with any hooks and any materials I could find, and after some few years I found out that like to tie salmon flies. I remember that I was very attracted to the delicate colors and shape that all those salmon flies had, especially the classics ones. But before I knew anything about using internet, I had to figure out self what kind of materials to look after and where to find them.
Afterwards I found out that I was most interested in classic salmon flies because of their beauty. As I’m interested in bird and feathers, the hobby just continued to grow bigger. There have been many people that have supported me in doing this art, like Jens Pilgaard that has helped me a lot as a mentor, learning me how to do classic flies as they did in old days. I have also received great support from local environment from the beginning.
Throughout the years I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and information about classic flies, but I still have a lot to learn. It’s amazing how much information that exist on internet, and I’ve got a lot of new friends from around the world through internet that I treasure, though I haven’t met most of them face to face yet. I’m quite sure I’ll meet many of them when I get a little older, having time to visit flyfairs abroad.
